Inlockly vs Bitwarden

Inlockly or Bitwarden?
Simple enough for the whole family.

Bitwarden is a popular open-source password manager, well liked by technical users. Inlockly focuses on simplicity for everyone at home and always-on SafetyMeter™ protection - on the same zero-knowledge model.

01 / At a glance

Before you decide.

Choose Inlockly if…

  • You want an app your parents, kids, or coworkers can use without a manual.
  • You'd rather have continuous breach alerts and password health checks than manually run reports.
  • You want a family plan that costs less per year.
  • You want a recovery key and a 30-day change history for items.

What Inlockly doesn't have yet

  • Passkey storage.
  • Vault access for a trusted contact (for example, in case of death) - instead, a recovery key and a family or company admin.
  • Open-source code and self-hosting for individuals - your own infrastructure is available with Enterprise.
  • The Free plan works on one device - all your devices are covered by the Personal plan.

02 / Key differences

What you get with Inlockly.

  • Designed for people, not admins.

Bitwarden has lots of options for advanced users. Inlockly walks you through each step - so the whole family actually uses a password manager.

  • SafetyMeter™ works around the clock.

In Bitwarden, you run reports on weak and exposed passwords yourself. SafetyMeter™ rates your vault continuously and warns you about breaches.

  • A recovery key.

Bitwarden can't reset your master password - what's left is emergency access through another person. With Inlockly, you recover your private vault with your own key.

  • Item change history.

Bitwarden remembers an item's previous passwords. Inlockly keeps 30 days of history for entire items - so you can undo an accidental change.

  • A family plan for less.

The Inlockly Family plan costs $39.90 a year for 5 people, compared with $47.88 for Bitwarden Families - with a private vault for everyone and a shared family vault.

  • The same security foundation.

Both encrypt your data on your device using a zero-knowledge model and can derive the key with Argon2id.

04 / Making the switch

Switch from Bitwarden in three steps.

  1. Export your Bitwarden vault.

In the web or desktop app, choose to export your vault and save it as CSV or JSON (unencrypted).

  2. Import it into Inlockly.

Open import in the Inlockly app and select the file. Your data is encrypted on your device before it reaches the cloud.

  3. Delete the file and install the apps.

The export file isn't encrypted - delete it after importing. Then install Inlockly on your phone and in your browser.

Import is available on every plan, including Free. Import guide ↗

05 / Good to know

Questions about switching from Bitwarden.

Bitwarden is cheaper. Why would I pay more?

For one person, Bitwarden Premium is cheaper ($19.80 a year versus $24.90) - we're upfront about that. For families, Inlockly costs less: $39.90 a year for 5 people versus $47.88. People choose Inlockly for simplicity the whole family can handle, always-on SafetyMeter™ alerts, a recovery key, and change history. You can try it at no cost on the Free plan.

Is Inlockly harder to use than Bitwarden?

It's designed to be easier. Inlockly guides you through setup, import, and autofill step by step, without advanced settings you need to understand first - so less technical family members can use it on their own.

What if I forget my master password?

In Bitwarden, the master password can't be reset - what's left is emergency access you set up in advance for a trusted contact (on the Premium plan). In Inlockly, every plan includes a recovery key created at sign-up, which lets you recover your private vault.

How do I move my passwords from Bitwarden to Inlockly?

Export your Bitwarden vault to a CSV or JSON file (unencrypted), then import it in the Inlockly app. Import is available on every plan. Delete the export file when you're done.
